16/12: Simple things

There is a quote, I think its by C.S. Lewis, that I will paraphrase as best as my memory will allow: “man was sent to earth in order to find beauty in the ordinary”. I think that one day so easily bleeds into another that it is easy to become blind to that beauty which is all around us. One of those beautiful things are snow storms, as heavy snow fell last week I found myself walking back from a Library board meeting along the sidewalk through a snow-silent night, no traffic passing, some street lights illuminating the falling snow, and as a trudged along I made my way to the bridge just before the house. In the padded silence of the trees and snow the river sounded all the more alive and I was struck by the beauty of the simplicity of the moment.
Another moment today, as this heavy storm bore down on us, and the scenery turns white outside the window, I sat in front of the woodstove with Zoe, teaching her to play jacks. Again I was struck by the beauty, this time of a simple game, and a warm fire as snow flew by the window. Onesies, twosies, threesies….
